Hi Dan,
Excellent post you put together here. Thank you for taking an in-depth look at Presently. We sincerely appreciate the criticism and advice that you've given to us.

A few updates:
- Our SaaS version is 100% free. No gimmicks, no seats, nothing. Whether you have 10 or 10k employees you can use our SaaS version absolutely free.
- SSL is enabled for all of our free SaaS users.
- Security within Presently is provided on multiple levels: The operating system (OS) of the host system, the virtual instance operating system or guest OS, a stateful firewall and signed API calls. Each of these items builds on the capabilities of the others. The goal is to ensure that data contained within Presently cannot be intercepted by non-authorized systems or users and that Presently instances themselves are as secure as possible without sacrificing the flexibility in configuration that we need to deliver our product effectively.
- We now support a number of mobile devices including: iPhone, Blackberry, Android, Windows Mobile and Palm Pre.
- We now have a downloadable Adobe Air application for Presently.
- We've reconstructed our API with enterprise in mind.
- Everything you see and use in the SaaS version is also available on our Behind the Firewall (BTF) enterprise microblogging platform. We try our best to keep the two of them on the bleeding edge and in-sync.

Thanks again for such an informative post.

I would say the primary advantage is probably... mobility. With Yammer, for instance, I can easily follow posts from other people, reply to them and write my own posts all from within a native client on my iPhone or Blackberry. Sure, I can do with a traditional message board app through a web GUI on my mobile device, but doing so is nowhere near as easy as a native mobile phone app makes it. Similarly, the standalone Yammer client running on my desktop lets me see the messages being posted, will trigger onscreen notification popups (if I enable them, etc), in ways that I don't have with a regular message board app.

Do you know of message board apps that have standalone desktop clients and mobile apps? Those could also potentially be used for this type of service if they are out there.

Forgive my ignorance -- but what do these tools have that a good message board application doesn't? Any good mb application will facilitate Silo-busting, connection, presence (with indicators, so the user doesn't have to explicitly update their status), progress, sales, and inspiration -- and within discreet threads so that an orderly discussion can be easily followed, instead of the rather chaotic yammer read.

Can someone help me understand?

Thx!

Yammer. Best solution we've found so far. Works for teams, works for company as a whole. Lots of us are on the road and lots of us are in silos and cross functional. So far it's been a plus all around.

Unfortunately, the Apple Address Book no longer supports syncing with Google Contacts. If it did, I'd be able to sync an Android phone with my Mac -- and maybe that's why Apple removed the syncing capability?
